The Backyardigans is an animated children's television series that revolves around a group of five animal friends who explore their imagination by embarking on various musical adventures in their backyard. In season 3 episode 12, titled "Front Page News!", the Backyardigans come together to create their own newspaper, 'The Backyard Gazette,' to report the latest happenings in their backyard.
The episode starts with the five friends - Austin the kangaroo, Tyrone the moose, Uniqua the pink-tailed monster, Tasha the hippopotamus, and Pablo the penguin, as they brainstorm creative new ideas to make their backyard newspaper interesting to read. As they discuss the different types of stories that they could feature in the paper, they receive word of a big breaking news story that's happening right in their own backyard. The Backyardigans immediately decide to investigate and report on the story, hoping it'll become their first-ever "front-page news" feature.
The Backyardanzines get right to work, collecting information and interviewing witnesses to the strange occurrence. They find that there has been an unusual object, a kind of strange and mystical gem, which appeared in their backyard. The object has caused various sorts of strange things like animals growing abnormally young or subjects contracting unexpected abilities. The gang gets so absorbed in telling their story that they even forget to go on their usual afternoon adventure.
They try to follow the gem's trajectory. They work through facts and seek answers to various questions. Who could have placed the gem? Did it fall from the sky? What's causing these strange occurrences in the backyard? They meet some characters on the way and add these characters' perspectives to the story. Along the way, the gang also faces unexpected challenges, from mazes to creatures stuck in vines, on their quest to uncover the truth about the mysterious gem that has turned their backyard upside down.
Despite the various ups and downs, the friends work together and gather all the necessary information to craft their story. They put all the pieces together in fantastic journalistic form, complete with bright, bold headlines and lots of photos and illustrations. Finally, they present their newspaper to each other, each of them having worked on different sections of the paper, and their friends are impressed with the quality of work they have accomplished. The Backyardigans definitely proved that they're a great team, not just making news but reporting them, too.
