Steed and Cathy Gale are investigating the assassination of a government-affiliated scientist, who was found dead on a plane. Initially, there seems to be no motive or suspects, but as they dig deeper, they uncover a web of conspiracy and corruption that goes all the way to the top. Along the way, they encounter a cast of colorful characters, including a femme fatale, a paranoid airline captain, and a group of sinister intellectuals.
The episode opens with the murder of Professor Swain, who is found dead in his seat on a plane returning to London. Steed is called in to investigate, and he enlists the help of Cathy Gale, who is an expert in the field of aviation. Together, they examine the crime scene and interview the crew and passengers, but they find no clues or motives. Cathy hypothesizes that the murder weapon may have been disguised as a common object, such as a pen or a cigarette lighter.
Their investigation leads them to the British Academy of Science, where Professor Swain was a member. They discover that he had been working on a top-secret project, which had been shut down by the government due to lack of funding. They also learn that several other scientists who had worked on the project had died under suspicious circumstances in the past year.
Things take a dangerous turn when Cathy is nearly killed by a bomb planted in her car. She manages to escape with minor injuries, but she realizes that they are dealing with a ruthless killer who will stop at nothing to keep the project's secrets hidden.
Steed and Cathy continue to follow the trail of clues, which leads them to a group of intellectuals who are plotting to overthrow the government and install their own regime. They discover that the group had hired a hitman to kill Professor Swain in order to protect their secrets, but they had not counted on Steed and Cathy's tenacity and cunning.
As they close in on the killer, they find themselves embroiled in a deadly game of cat and mouse that takes them to the sky and beyond. They must outsmart their foes and use all of their skills and resources to stay alive and bring the murderer to justice.
In the end, they succeed in unraveling the conspiracy and bringing the killer to justice. But they also realize that there are much larger forces at work, and that their fight for justice will never truly be over. As they leave the scene of the crime, they share a knowing glance, knowing that they will continue to stand strong and protect their country from those who seek to do it harm.
