When Mayberry's sheriff, Andy Taylor, takes a temporary leave of absence, Deputy Barney Fife decides to run for sheriff in his place. Though his heart is in the right place, Barney soon realizes that he may not be cut out for the job.
With Andy away on a mountain fishing trip, Barney assumes the role of acting sheriff. He begins by giving a speech at the Ladies Aid Society and quickly gains popularity as he lists his priorities for the town, including fighting crime and putting an end to the town drunk's public displays.
Barney's campaign for sheriff gains momentum when he receives a surprise endorsement from Otis Campbell, the town drunk, who pledges to clean up his act if Barney is elected. Barney also receives support from a group of local businessmen who are looking for a change in leadership.
