Gumball Watterson, a 12-year-old blue cat, and his adoptive goldfish brother Darwin Watterson attend Elmore Junior High where they often find themselves in absurd situations. In season 1, episode 15 titled "The GI," Gumball and Darwin's gym teacher, Coach Russo, encourages the students to bring their grandfathers to school for Grandparents Day.
Gumball is initially excited to bring his grandfather, but his enthusiasm is dampened when he realizes that his grandfather, Frankie Watterson, is only interested in taking things from the school. Frankie, who is a retired military officer, becomes fixated on retrieving his "GI," an item he believes is hidden somewhere in the school.
Meanwhile, all the other students are having a great time with their grandfathers, enjoying games and snacks, while Gumball tries to keep his grandfather out of trouble. Frankie's search for the GI takes them on a wild adventure through the school, from the library to the cafeteria, to the principal's office.
As Gumball becomes increasingly exasperated with his grandfather's antics, Darwin suggests that they take a different approach and try to understand why Frankie cares so much about finding the GI. It turns out that the GI is actually a medal that Frankie earned for his service in the military, and he wants to pass it down to Gumball as a reminder to always be brave and strong.
In the end, Gumball and Darwin help Frankie find the GI, and he presents it to Gumball. Despite the chaos and misadventures they faced, Gumball realizes how important it was to spend time with his grandfather and learn about his past.
