Paddington and the Stately Home is the one-hundred-fourth episode in the first season of The Adventures of Paddington Bear. In this episode, Paddington and the Brown family agree to look after the grand house of Mrs. Bird's cousin, Lord Thomas, while he is on holiday in Switzerland. Paddington is thrilled to be staying in such a grand house and immediately sets about exploring.
As Paddington explores the house, he learns about many of its fascinating features, such as the secret passage that leads to the tower or the hidden messages on the veiled portraits. He also gets to meet some of the other occupants of the house, including Lady Lydia, Lord Thomas's daughter, who is busy preparing for a grand ball that is due to take place later that week.
Paddington is eager to help out and offers to lend a hand wherever he can. However, his helpful nature leads to some unexpected mishaps, such as the time he accidentally spills paint all over Lady Lydia's dress, or the time he gets a little too eager with the cake mix in the kitchen.
Despite these setbacks, Paddington is determined to make sure that everything is perfect for the upcoming ball. He spends hours polishing the floors, dusting the chandeliers and arranging the flowers in the grand entrance hall. However, disaster strikes when the ballroom ceiling collapses just hours before the guests are due to arrive.
With no time to spare, Paddington and the Brown family work together to try and fix the ceiling before the party starts. They manage to come up with a creative solution involving balloon animals and twine, and just in time too! The guests begin to arrive, dressed in their finest clothes, and Paddington is delighted to see Lady Lydia looking beautiful in a new gown, made from the old dress that he spilled paint on.
As the party gets into full swing, Paddington is in his element, mingling with the guests, helping to serve the delicious food and showing off the wonderful house. However, he soon realizes that something is not quite right. Lady Lydia seems unhappy, despite the success of the party, and Paddington is determined to find out why.
After some detective work, Paddington discovers that Lady Lydia is upset because she is caught between two worlds. She loves her life in the grand house, but also misses the simple life that she had when she visited her grandmother in the countryside. Paddington sympathizes with her and comes up with a plan to make her feel better.
Together, they take a trip out into the countryside, where Paddington shows Lady Lydia all of the wonderful things that can be found there, such as beautiful gardens, fresh produce, and friendly animals. At the end of their trip, Lady Lydia realizes that she doesn't have to choose between the two worlds and that she can enjoy both equally.
With Lady Lydia feeling happier and more content, Paddington returns to the grand house, ready to finish off the last of the party guests before they leave. As he says goodbye, the Brown family and Lady Lydia thank him for his help and Paddington realizes that even in a stately home, there is always room for a friendly bear.
