That 90's Show is a Netflix comedy series that premiered in January 2023. Set in 1995, the show serves as a sequel to the popular 1990s sitcom That 70's Show. While featuring some of the original cast members reprising their roles, That 90's Show focuses on a new group of teenagers living in Point Place, Wisconsin.
The show centers around Leia Forman, the teenage daughter of Eric and Donna. She decides to stay with her grandparents Red and Kitty Forman for the summer, where she ends up hanging out with their eccentric neighbor Pamela. Leia also befriends Gwen, a rebellious teen who catches the eye of Jay, Leia's handsome male friend. Rounding out the new gang of teens is Nate and his little sister Nikki, Ozzie, a passionate musician, and the sarcastic Rico.
That 90's Show has a similar vibe and style to its predecessor, with the teens frequently chilling out in the Formans' basement. Lots of 1990s nostalgia is packed into the show through its fashion, music, technology and pop culture references. However, That 90's Show also explores contemporary themes around identity, relationships and growing up. While paying homage to the original series, it aims to stand on its own with a fresh perspective.
In addition to introducing new characters, That 90's Show also features guest appearances from favorites from That 70's Show. Topher Grace and Mila Kunis reprise their roles as Eric and Jackie, who are now married and visiting Point Place. Ashton Kutcher also returns as Michael Kelso, still the dumb pretty boy fans remember. Laura Prepon and Wilmer Valderrama are back as Donna and Fez as well, though their roles are limited. Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith are excellent as always playing the older but not necessarily wiser Red and Kitty.
While the new teenage characters and storylines are the primary focus, seeing the return of the old gang adds fun nostalgia and connections to the original show. Their appearances tie the two series together nicely.
That 90's Show is filled with all the buoyant comedy, heart and hijinks that made That 70's Show so beloved. The funny writing and solid cast of young talents have critics and fans praising the sequel series. The 1990s setting complete with quintessential music, fashion and pop culture references is sure to delight viewers who grew up in that era. Both long-time fans and newcomers have been enjoying the show, proving that the groovy Forman basement is still a cool place to hang out.
