Terraformars is a science fiction anime series that was first aired in 2014 on Tokyo MX. Based on the manga of the same name by author YÅ« Sasuga and illustrator Kenichi Tachibana, the show is set in the distant future where humanity has set its sights on colonizing Mars. As there is no atmosphere or water, scientists have genetically engineered an insect-like creature called a Terraformar which is capable of terraforming the planet to make it habitable for humans.
The story follows a group of young astronauts who embark on a mission to Mars, tasked with exterminating the Terraformars which have overrun the planet. In order to do so, they must also undergo a procedure which infuses their bodies with the DNA of various animals, granting them superhuman abilities.
In addition to the astronauts, the show features a number of different factions who all have their own agenda when it comes to Mars. The most prominent of these is the U-NASA organization, which is responsible for overseeing the mission and the military forces on the planet. There is also a shadowy organization called Annex 1 which plays a major role in the series, and is composed of soldiers and scientists from various countries around the world.
As the story progresses, the astronauts must not only fight against the Terraformars, but also against each other and the various factions vying for control of Mars. Tensions run high, and the characters are often forced to make difficult decisions in order to survive.
One of the strengths of Terraformars is its unique setting and premise. The concept of genetically engineering insects to terraform another planet is both intriguing and terrifying, and the show does a good job of exploring the potential consequences of such a venture. The Terraformars themselves are also well-designed and incredibly dangerous, making for some thrilling action scenes throughout the series.
Another standout feature of the show is its character designs. Each of the astronauts is infused with the DNA of a different animal, resulting in a diverse range of abilities and appearances. This not only adds an element of unpredictability to the fights, but also allows for interesting character interactions as the team struggles to work together despite their differences.
In terms of animation and music, Terraformars is competent if not exceptional. The action scenes are well-animated and exciting to watch, and the soundtrack is suitably epic in scope. However, the show occasionally suffers from erratic pacing and a lack of focus, with some episodes feeling disjointed or rushed.
Overall, Terraformars is an entertaining and unique sci-fi anime that is sure to appeal to fans of the genre. The setting and characters are engaging, and the action is thrilling throughout. While it may not be without its flaws, the series is well worth checking out for those looking for something a little different from the usual anime fare.
Terraformars is a series that ran for 2 seasons (26 episodes) between September 26, 2014 and on Tokyo MX
