5. Collateral Damage

"I don't give a f*** whether he loved us or not. It makes no difference." - Elizabeth Kendall's daughter, Molly. Elizabeth and Molly are bravely moving on, but like most survivors they are plagued with guilt. Both struggle not to think about the grotesque things Ted was actually doing while professing love to them, his makeshift family. It's soul destroying. There's no doubt of his guilt, yet even on death row he manages to fool people and garner supporters. Carole Boone, now married to Ted, still believes in his innocence and, even though he's behind bars, they manage to start a family. Maligned for marrying Ted at the Kimberly Leach trial, Carole is the perfect new victim. Boone's friend suspects she feels blamed for the death of her teenage brother years ago, and rescuing Ted became her tragic mission. Newly minted lawyer Polly Nelson catches Ted's death row appeals as her first case. Idealistic and fired up to save her client from the murderous clutches of the state, she pours herself into saving Ted's life. A noble cause, or so she thinks-until he finally admits to her what he did, in the lonely wilderness, to a terrified hitchhiker. It's traumatic. "I had joined forces with a guilty and remorseless killer." The appeals, however, eventually run out. Trying to save his own skin, Ted finally drops the act and starts confessing to police, but no deals are coming in and his execution stands. The scene outside the prison is a twisted tailgate party. Boisterous revelers cheer on the electrocution as if Ted's death gives them safety. Some women see it differently. Ted Bundy himself is gone, but he's left a reason for them to lock their doors at night.

4. Take Care of Yourself, Young Man

"... at that point the spell was broken and I just hung up on him." - Elizabeth Kendall. Ted's jail escapes should destroy what's left of his polished image, exposing the empty promise of superficial male perfection and privilege. Yet, he still has defenders, some of them female. A savage nighttime attack inside a University of Florida Chi Omega sorority house kills two, and later, a 12-year-old girl from Lake City disappears. In Seattle, Elizabeth sees the news and calls the police. She knows it's him. Ted is finally caught while driving a stolen car. Incredibly, local police don't realize who he is and Ted makes a deal to reveal himself, only if he can make a collect call-to Elizabeth. He finally admits to her what she feared all along and the spell is finally broken. After interviewing Ted, reporter Mark Pinsky is shaken. Seemingly normal Ted and the average American male are more alike than he'd ever thought possible. "If he is capable of it, maybe I am too." The Chi Omega trial is a massive television event. Details of the killer's depravity are on display, while Ted, in a tweed jacket, plays lawyer. He doesn't even flinch when survivors describe what he did. Broken jaws, fractured skulls, bite marks-the crime scene photos are unspeakably grim. Even so, the judge offers his best wishes, as if Ted's a professional peer. "Take care of yourself young man

3. Gone Girls

1974-1977: More disappearances follow Ted to Utah where he is at law school. Elizabeth tumbles down the rabbit hole of doubt, wondering whether or not her boyfriend is the culprit. For a while, police rule him out. After a kidnapping survivor identifies Ted as her attacker, however, he is arrested, thrusting Elizabeth even further into limbo.

2. Falling

1974: Ted gets accepted into law school in Utah, but he refuses to ask Elizabeth to move down with him. Their relationship begins to fray and she blames herself. Meanwhile, female students continue to disappear throughout Washington state and a composite sketch of the suspect convinces campus cop Cheryl Martin that the disappearances may be linked.
