In the second season of the hit sitcom Taxi, the first episode titled "Louie and the Nice Girl" introduces us to a new character named Zena. She is a friendly woman who starts working as a dispatcher at the Sunshine Cab Company. Zena quickly proves that she's not just a pretty face, as she helps to improve the company's efficiency and brings a new level of positivity to the dispatching area.
The episode starts with Louie De Palma, the cantankerous dispatcher, feeling down about his love life and his failed attempt at hitting on a woman named Elaine. He seeks comfort from his co-workers, who quickly tire of his negativity. Zena overhears Louie's sullen conversation and decides to cheer him up. She puts on a show and puts a smile on everyone's faces, including Louie's.
Meanwhile, Alex Reiger, the lead character of the show, is trying to get a promotion to being a supervisor. However, he is told by his boss that there is no available spot at the moment. Alex feels disappointed and goes for a drive in his cab. He meets a woman named Janet, who is also feeling down about her job as a musician. Alex is able to provide comfort to Janet, and they end up spending the night together.
Elsewhere, Tony Banta, the cab driver and aspiring boxer, struggles with his emotions after seeing his ex-girlfriend with another man. He seeks consolation from his friend and fellow cab driver, Bobby. Bobby tries to help Tony in his own way by taking him out drinking. However, things don't go as planned, and a drunken Tony confronts his ex-girlfriend's new beau.
As the night progresses, Louie takes a liking to Zena, and the two end up sharing a kiss. However, Louie's selfishness resurfaces when he realizes that Zena has a sense of humor that could potentially make him the butt of a few jokes. He immediately tells her to leave the room, ignoring her attempts to explain her intentions.
In the end, Alex's one-night stand with Janet turns out to be more than he bargained for when she writes a song about him. Tony, still upset about his ex-girlfriend, turns to the only person he knows will give him the straight talk he needs, his therapist. And Zena continues to bring positivity to the Sunshine Cab Company as she gets to know the drivers and dispatchers better, particularly Louie.
Overall, "Louie and the Nice Girl" sets up the second season of Taxi to explore more of the personal lives and relationships of the main characters, as well as introduce new ones who will undoubtedly make their mark on the show.
