After a long and hectic day at work, the cabbies of the Sunshine Cab Company are looking forward to spending their Christmas Eve with their loved ones. Louie De Palma, the dispatcher, assigns them their last ride of the day, which turns out to be a single fare to the airport. Meanwhile, Jim Ignatowski, a former employee of the Sunshine Cab Company, pays a surprise visit to the garage. Jim has been living in a monastery for the past few months and has just returned to New York. He has nowhere to go on Christmas and wishes to spend it with the cabbies.
On their way to the airport, the cabbies encounter several obstacles, including a car accident that causes a major traffic jam, and a female passenger who goes into labor. They manage to deliver the passenger to the airport in time, but it’s too late for her to catch her flight. Feeling sorry for the pregnant woman, the cabbies offer to drive her back to her home in New Jersey.
As they head back to New Jersey, the cabbies realize that they won't be able to make it home in time for Christmas. They decide to spend the night with the pregnant woman and her family, who have welcomed them with open arms. The cabbies, along with Jim, celebrate Christmas with the pregnant woman and her family, and it turns out to be a memorable one.
At the same time, Louie De Palma, who initially refused to give the cabbies time off for Christmas, is alone and miserable at the garage. He attempts to lighten the mood by putting up a small Christmas tree, but it only serves to remind him of his loneliness. To make matters worse, Louie's estranged mother calls him, wishing him a Merry Christmas and inviting him over for dinner. Louie is torn between his pride and his deep-seated desire to reconnect with his mother.
As the night wears on, Louie reflects on his past and realizes that he must set aside his ego and make amends with his mother. He decides to visit her, but when he arrives, he finds that his mother has passed away. Louie's heartbreak is palpable as he reflects on missed opportunities and lost time. In a poignant scene, Louie apologizes to his mother for not being a better son and leaves a small Christmas gift on her grave.
The episode concludes with the cabbies returning to the garage, exhausted but happy. They realize that they've been through an unforgettable experience that has brought them closer together as friends and colleagues. Louie, who has been touched by the events of the night, welcomes them back with a rare show of emotion.
