In "Ep 43 - The Newspaper," of Tales of Wells Fargo season 2, Jim Hardie arrives in Deadwood to begin his investigation of the Black Hills stage line. On his way to the stage office, Hardie is accosted by a drunken man who threatens him with a knife until the town sheriff intervenes.
Upon arriving at the stage office, Hardie meets with the manager, Mr. Avery, who is nervously awaiting the latest edition of the Deadwood newspaper. When the paper finally arrives, Avery frantically reads through it and turns pale when he reads an article accusing the stage line of transporting illegal goods.
Hardie decides to investigate the matter and discovers that the editor of the newspaper, Mr. Johnson, has been receiving bribes from a rival stage line to publish the false accusations against the Black Hills line. Hardie confronts Johnson and exposes his corruption, leading to the editor's arrest.
However, the situation soon takes a dangerous turn when a group of masked gunmen attack the stage office, attempting to steal the company's payroll. Hardie and Avery manage to fight off the robbers, but not before one of them is killed.
As Hardie continues his investigation, he discovers that the robbery was not a random event, but instead was orchestrated by the rival stage line in an attempt to eliminate their competition. With the help of the sheriff, Hardie is able to bring the culprits to justice and ensure the safety of the Black Hills stage line.
Throughout the episode, tension and danger are constantly present as Hardie navigates his way through the corruption and violence of Deadwood. With his quick wits and determination, he is able to uncover the truth and restore justice to the town.
