In season 2 episode 1 of Tales of the Unexpected, entitled "Royal Jelly," viewers are brought into the world of beekeeping. Albert (played by Timothy West) is a beekeeper who is constantly overlooked in beekeeping competitions, despite his best efforts. His wife, Mabel (played by Susan George), is supportive but also wishes that Albert's bees would produce more honey so that they could make more money.
One day, Albert discovers a special type of royal jelly that he believes will give his bees the boost they need to produce more honey. He decides to conduct an experiment and give this royal jelly to one of his hives. To his delight, the hive begins to produce an incredible amount of honey. Albert is overjoyed and believes that he has finally found the solution he has been searching for.
However, after giving the royal jelly to a few more hives, Albert begins to realize that something strange is happening to the bees. They are becoming aggressive and their colors are changing. He investigates further and discovers that the royal jelly is not just increasing honey production, but is actually transforming the bees into a completely new species.
As Albert becomes more obsessed with the transformative properties of the royal jelly, he becomes distant from Mabel and their daughter, Mary (played by Georgina Hale). Mabel becomes increasingly concerned about Albert's behavior and begins to suspect that there is something sinister going on with the bees.
As the episode progresses, viewers are led on a journey of discovery as the true powers of the royal jelly are revealed. "Royal Jelly" is a suspenseful and creepy episode that will have audiences on the edge of their seats until the very end.
