This Is the Color of My Dreams is the twenty-third episode of the first season of Switched at Birth. The show follows two teenage girls, Bay Kennish and Daphne Vasquez, who were switched at birth and grew up in very different worlds. In this episode, the girls are both dealing with big life changes.
Bay is still reeling from the revelation that her biological father is actually the man who raised Daphne, and not the wealthy art dealer who she thought was her dad. She's also struggling with her feelings for Emmett, the deaf boy she's been dating. When he surprises her by bringing her to a kind of underground art exhibit, she's both intrigued and a little out of her comfort zone. But when Emmett's ex-girlfriend Simone shows up, Bay finds herself feeling more insecure than ever. Things only get worse when she gets home to find out that her grandmother is in the hospital, and her family is falling apart without her.
Meanwhile, Daphne is focused on her own problems. Her mom has finally agreed to let her start the clinical trial that could help restore her hearing, but it requires her to take a potentially fatal drug. Daphne is nervous, but she's also excited at the prospect of finally being able to hear again. But when she starts to experience side effects, she begins to wonder if it's worth the risk. She's also dealing with the fallout from finding out that her boyfriend Wilke kissed her best friend, and trying to figure out what that means for their relationship.
As the episode unfolds, the two girls find themselves in very different situations but both struggling with the idea of change. Bay is grappling with the fact that her whole life has been turned upside down, while Daphne is wrestling with the idea that getting her hearing back might not solve all of her problems. In the end, they both realize that sometimes change can be scary, but it can also be the key to unlocking new possibilities.
