Bay Kennish and Daphne Vasquez are two teenagers who discover they were accidentally switched at birth. In season 1 episode 21, entitled "The Sleep Of Reason Produces Monsters," Bay is going through a rough time as she tries to cope with the fact that her biological father is not who she thought it was. Meanwhile, Daphne tries to come to terms with the fact that she may never be able to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor due to her deafness.

The episode opens with Bay struggling in her art class as her teacher critiques her painting. Bay is frustrated and angry that she can't seem to get anything right lately, and she storms out of the class after arguing with her teacher. Later, she meets up with her biological dad, Angelo, who wants to take her to a street art show. Despite her reservations, Bay agrees to go with him, hoping to connect with him and explore her artistic side.

Meanwhile, Daphne is preparing for a chemistry test at school. She is determined to do well and pursue her dream of becoming a doctor, but her deafness makes it difficult for her to keep up with the class. She is disappointed when her study group cancels on her, leaving her to study alone. Later, she confides in her mom, Regina, about her struggles and fears about being able to achieve her dream.

Back at the street art show, Bay is enjoying spending time with Angelo and experiencing the art scene. However, things take a turn when they come across a mural painted by Tank, an old friend of Angelo's. Bay is shocked to learn that the mural was inspired by a photo of her, and Tank admits that he has been following her on social media and painting murals of her around the city. Bay is angry and uncomfortable by this revelation, feeling violated and objectified.

Daphne's day also takes a negative turn when she discovers that she failed her chemistry test. She feels defeated and unsure of what to do next, but her mom reminds her that failure is a natural part of growth and that she will eventually figure it out. Encouraged, Daphne reaches out to a classmate for help and schedules a meeting with her professor to discuss her options.

Later, Bay confronts Angelo about the mural and her discomfort with being objectified. She is frustrated by his nonchalant attitude towards the situation and his apparent lack of concern for her feelings. She storms off, feeling even more lost than before.

The episode concludes with Daphne's professor giving her the opportunity to do an extra credit project in order to raise her grade. She is excited and grateful, feeling that she has finally found a way to pursue her dream. Bay, on the other hand, is still struggling to come to terms with her identity and her relationship with her biological father.

Overall, "The Sleep Of Reason Produces Monsters" is a powerful episode that deals with important themes of identity, artistic expression, and overcoming adversity. It is a strong showcase for the talented cast and the thought-provoking writing that has made Switched at Birth such a popular and beloved series.
