In Superstore season 4 episode 9 titled "Shadowing Glenn," newly-appointed assistant manager of Cloud 9 store, Amy (America Ferrera) is tasked with shadowing Glenn (Mark McKinney) in a bid to learn the ropes of store management. However, her day quickly takes a turn for the worse when she realizes Glenn has no real responsibilities.
Things take a dramatic turn when Myrtle (Linda Porter), the oldest employee at Cloud 9 and an endearing figure to all staff members, faints and is rushed to the hospital. Amy takes charge of the situation and insists that Glenn heads over to the hospital to ensure Myrtle is being taken care of until her family arrives.
Meanwhile, Mateo (Nico Santos), who is on a suspended transfer following his immigration status being discovered by corporate, discovers that his secret is not as safe as he had hoped. He turns to his colleagues for emotional support, but there seems to be something much more sinister brewing in the Cloud 9 corners.
As Dina (Lauren Ash) makes it her mission to uncover the source of the vitriol against the company, Jonah (Ben Feldman) discovers something that forces him into making a difficult decision. He is forced to balance his loyalty to his colleagues with his commitment to the company. This decision is further complicated by the question of whether he should stay on as a Cloud 9 employee when he and Amy appear to be inching closer to a relationship.
"Shadowing Glenn" is a fantastic blend of intrigue, suspense, and excellent comic timing. It boasts of an excellent ensemble cast who is in top form in this episode. America Ferrera shines as always, with her impeccable timing and great comedic sensibility. Mark McKinney is hilarious as Glenn, a somewhat absent-minded yet kind manager.
Lauren Ash delivers a standout performance as Dina, a character that is often portrayed harshly but sometimes reveals her heart of gold under the iron exterior. Nico Santos's character Mateo continues to draw the audience's sympathy. There is not shortage of hilarity in this episode. The moments in which the Cloud 9 staff tries to speculate the source of the negative Cloud 9 review, will have you laughing out loud.
What makes this episode great is the way it strikes a balance between humor and dramatic tension. Though the show leans heavily towards the comedic side, the emotional stakes in this episode are high. Thus, the audience is invested in the characters, and more importantly, their fate in the Cloud 9 world.
In conclusion, Superstore season 4 episode 9 titled "Shadowing Glenn" is another great episode of this excellent show. The storyline is intriguing, the comedic timing is great, and the cast is top-notch. Be sure to tune in to watch this episode.
