In Superstore season 4 episode 18, titled "Cloud Green," the Cloud 9 employees find out that the store is going green. However, this causes some unexpected challenges for the staff, particularly for Amy, who has to deal with the store's new environmentally friendly policies while simultaneously managing her own struggles with her husband's deportation.
As the episode begins, the store's employees are thrilled to learn that Cloud 9 is making an effort to become more environmentally friendly. Maya, who is in charge of the store's green initiative, explains to the staff that the store is introducing a variety of new policies, such as encouraging customers to use reusable bags and reducing the use of plastic. The employees are initially excited about the new changes, with even Jonah - known for his progressive ideals - feeling proud to be part of a company that is being socially responsible.
However, as the episode progresses, the employees soon realize that going green is not as simple as they initially thought. They find themselves struggling to implement some of the new policies, such as how to handle customers who refuse to use their own bags, and how to reduce plastic waste while still maintaining a high level of customer service.
Meanwhile, Amy is dealing with her own personal struggles. She has been at odds with her husband Adam ever since he was deported to Mexico, and she is finding it difficult to cope with his absence. She tries to distract herself by focusing on work, but the new green policies only add to her stress. When she discovers that the store has been throwing out perfectly good produce simply because it is not aesthetically pleasing, she becomes frustrated and decides to take matters into her own hands.
As the episode reaches its climax, the employees rally together to try and meet Maya's green targets, with varying degrees of success. Some, like Mateo, are genuinely committed to the cause, while others, like Sandra, struggle to adapt to the new policies. Meanwhile, Amy tries to salvage the thrown-out produce by organizing a makeshift farmer's market in the parking lot, hoping to sell the vegetables to customers who are willing to buy them.
In the end, the employees are able to meet Maya's targets, though not without a few bumps along the way. Amy, too, is able to find some closure, as she realizes that she cannot control everything in her life, but she can at least do her part to make the world a better place. As the episode ends, the employees gather together to celebrate their success, toasting with reusable water bottles instead of disposable cups.
Overall, Superstore season 4 episode 18 is an engaging and thought-provoking episode that explores some of the challenges of going green, both in terms of environmental impact and personal responsibility. It is a great example of how this popular sitcom can tackle important social issues while still delivering laughs and memorable moments.
