Part-time Hires is the third episode of Superstore season 3. In this episode, we see the story of the Cloud 9 store's attempt to bring in new part-time employees. The episode opens with Glenn and Dina discussing the upcoming staff Christmas party and the concerns they have about the reliance of the store on part-time employees. Glenn proposes their solution: by bringing in two new part-time hires to help with the holiday rush, they can streamline the store's workforce so that the holiday season isn't a complete dumpster fire.
The rest of the episode focuses on the hiring process and the characters who are brought in to fill the positions. There's Brett, a recent college graduate who is eager to get his foot in the door in the business world, and Colleen, a single mom who has been out of the workforce for years. Meanwhile, Jonah and Amy are tasked with training their new hires, despite their own personal issues and agendas.
As we see each new hire's orientation, it's clear that the store is not prepared to handle the demands of new employees; however, they are trying their best to work with what they have. Colleen is given the task of organizing a baby shower for one of the employees, which Jonah is not enthusiastic about. Meanwhile, Brett is excited to work at the store, but quickly realizes how overwhelming the job can be. While Brett's enthusiastic personality is welcome at first, his carelessness and lack of focus ultimately lead to a disastrous situation that jeopardizes his job.
Throughout the episode, there are several subplots involving other characters in the store. Sandra's boyfriend Jerry is now her supervisor, which leads to some concern and awkwardness between the two of them. Mateo is stuck in a health kick competition with Cheyenne, and neither of them will back down. Additionally, Glenn is trying to get the store to participate in a charity drive, but his efforts are met with resistance from his coworkers.
Ultimately, Colleen and Brett's relationship takes a turn for the worse when Brett realizes that Colleen may not be the perfect employee after all. Meanwhile, Jonah and Amy's personal relationship takes a turn as well, with the two of them exploring what a potential romance could look like. The episode ends with the staff Christmas party, where tensions are high and unresolved conflicts come to the surface.
Part-time Hires is a great episode of Superstore that delivers both comedy and heart. It explores the challenges of working in retail, and brings to light the difficulties that part-time employees face. It's a great episode for fans of the show, and is sure to keep viewers entertained from start to finish.
