The episode entitled "Olympics" is the first installment of Superstore's second season. As the name suggests, the episode centers around the Olympic games. It is a continuation of the show's usual format, which features the daily happenings of employees working at the Cloud 9 retail store.
The episode begins with the announcement that the corporate office is planning to hold an Olympics-themed competition between the various stores under the company's umbrella. The winner is promised an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas. The employees at Cloud 9 are excited about the opportunity to showcase their abilities and win the prize.
However, the competition is not all that it seems. It is revealed that the other stores have already held their competitions and have cheated to gain an advantage. The Cloud 9 employees become disillusioned and begin to lose their enthusiasm for the event. However, store manager Glenn (Mark McKinney) insists that they participate, as he sees it as an opportunity to bond with his team.
The competition itself is structured like a decathlon, with events ranging from potato sack races to math quizzes. The employees are divided into teams, but their lack of cohesion and coordination causes them to lose the lead quickly. Their spirits are lifted when they receive a surprise visit from former Olympic gold medalist, Missy Jones (Cecily Strong).
Missy agrees to train the Cloud 9 team and help them win the competition. Her training - which includes harsh criticism and rigorous workouts - is initially met with resistance, but the employees soon realize that they need to work together if they want to have any chance at winning.
The training pays off and the team is able to catch up to the other stores. However, they soon realize that corporate has not been entirely truthful about the stakes of the competition. The winning team will not actually receive a prize, but rather bragging rights. In fact, the Las Vegas trip was a fabrication to motivate the stores to compete harder.
At first, the team is disheartened by the revelation. But they soon realize that they do not need the promise of a lavish prize to motivate them. They become determined to win the competition for the sake of winning.
In the end, the Cloud 9 team triumphs and celebrates their victory. The employees bond over their shared experience and come out of it with a newfound appreciation for each other.
The episode's themes center around teamwork, perseverance, and the importance of honesty. It also showcases the various personalities within the store and how they come together to achieve a common goal. Overall, it is a lighthearted and fun episode that sets the stage for the rest of the season.
