Superstition was a supernatural series created by Joel Anderson Thompson and Mario Van Peebles, which aired on Syfy from 2017 to 2018. The show was set in a small town called La Rochelle, located in the southern United States, where the wealthy and powerful Hastings family run a funeral home and a powerful occult order known as The Order of the Phoenix.
The town was plagued by supernatural occurrences, and the Hastings family, led by Isaac (played by Mario Van Peebles), acted as protectors and guardians of the town against the dark forces that threaten its wellbeing. Isaac has a son, Calvin Hastings (played by Brad James), who is a former cop and returned to La Rochelle to help his father. Along with his sister, Bea (played by Morgana Van Peebles), and his colleague, May Westbrook (played by Robinne Lee), Calvin investigates a series of strange and mysterious events that threaten to destroy the town.
Each episode of Superstition met Calvin and his team confronting various supernatural creatures, from ghosts to demons to witches, and uncovering the hidden secrets of The Order of the Phoenix. The show had an impressive cast, with Mario Van Peebles leading the charge as Isaac, the patriarch of the Hastings family who has dedicated his life to protecting La Rochelle. Van Peebles' daughter, Morgana Van Peebles, played Bea, Calvin's estranged sister, who returned to La Rochelle to help her father and brother despite their turbulent past. Brad James portrayed Calvin, the series' protagonist, who is both heroic and flawed.
James brought heart and depth to the character, making him a likable lead with a strong sense of morality that propelled him forward in his quest to protect the town from supernatural dangers. Robinne Lee played May, Calvin's colleague and a doctor, who provided a different perspective to the supernatural events that occurred in the town.
Visually, Superstition was stunning, with a Southern Gothic vibe that added to the overall creepy atmosphere of the show. The town of La Rochelle was portrayed as a character in its own right, with its history and mythology playing an important role in each episode. From the dark, winding streets to the misty swamps and graveyards, the show's setting was both beautiful and eerie.
The show's storytelling was also impressive, with each episode introducing a new mystery or supernatural threat, while also delving deeper into the main characters' pasts and relationships. The mythology of The Order of the Phoenix was expertly woven into the narrative, with each episode revealing more about the secret society and their sinister motives.
Overall, Superstition was a unique and exciting supernatural series that brought a fresh perspective to the genre. The show's expert storytelling, stunning visuals, and strong performances made it a standout among other supernatural series. Sadly, after only one season, Syfy decided to cancel the show, leaving fans disappointed and craving for more. Despite being canceled, Superstition remains a must-watch for fans of the supernatural genre.
