Supernatural fans endured an agonizing wait for the season four episode nine, titled I Know What You Did Last Summer. This episode picks up right where the previous episode left off with Dean interrupting Sam and Ruby in a grave yard. In this episode, the Winchesters are on the search for the demon Lilith, and they discover that they may need to enlist the help of a psychic who can connect them with someone who may know her location.
The plot follows the story of two main characters - Sam and Ruby. Sam experiences severe withdrawal from Ruby's demon blood addiction, causing Sam's hallucinations and physical reactions that are brutal. In a bid to settle Sam's health, Ruby takes him to a safe house in Nebraska, where he can detox properly, and they're safe from the demons. From here on, they start exchanging war stories about when and how Sam and Ruby first met. It appears that this is the storyline that will connect the dots together for the audience.
The episode's main highlight is watching the mythology behind Ruby unfold and learning more about Sam and what he went through while he was addicted to demon blood. The viewers are in for an emotional rollercoaster as Sam deals with his inner demons. Jared Padalecki's acting is commendable during the emotional part when Sam is recovering from detoxification.
Meanwhile, Dean and Castiel are staking out a church, waiting for an angel to possess a hunter, so they can interrogate the angel and find Lilith. Finally, after a while of waiting, the angel Anna appears to them, possessing a girl Jessica. Dean thinks it is Castiel's doing instead of Lilith, but soon they realize that it is not--she is there to try and stop them from finding Lilith. Anna reveals to them that Lilith is holding onto a seal in order to start the apocalypse. A lot of the conversations with Anna end up foreshadowing the apocalypse to the audience in a significant way.
Throughout the episode, Anna's presence ends up adding multiple myths and twists that keep the viewers engaged with the plot. Anna is the only angel shown weapons and has the ability to banish other angels. This leads to some interesting observations by Dean about angels and how they fit into God's plan. Anna appears to have her motives that she keeps hidden from the brothers.
Overall, I Know What You Did Last Summer serves as a mid-season thriller that brings multiple myths to the table for the audience to digest. The episode is incredibly fast-paced, and the last few minutes undoubtedly leave the show's viewers on the edge of their seats, wondering what will happen next. It's an intense ride from start to finish, and a great opportunity for Supernatural fans to dive deeper into the show's world. The similarities between the relationship of Sam and Dean with Ruby and Sam showcase a different perspective in the plot's portrayal. The demon blood storyline showed a break from the typical demon storyline and ended up adding more depth to the show's characters. Fans were eager to see how this storyline would play out in the upcoming episodes.
