The Heroes’ Journey is the tenth episode of the fifteenth season of the long-running horror-fantasy TV series Supernatural. This final season is split into twenty episodes and the audience has been eagerly waiting for the reintroduction of characters from previous seasons, as well as for some conclusive end to the series that started way back in 2005 on the CW network.
In the previous episode, our heroes; Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), collectively known as the Winchester brothers, had just managed to evade yet another attempt of death from Chuck (Rob Benedict), the ever-powerful and omniscient being who happens to be the creator of the multiverse. This episode starts immediately where we left off in the previous, the Winchester brothers are in the middle of nowhere, out of gas, out of ammunition, barely coherent, and nursing wounds from their near-death experiences. As they sit and catch their breaths, they ponder their next move in the chess game that they have been playing with Chuck.
Sam pulls out an old book from the pile of stuff they had retrieved from their basement before setting out on their current mission. The book happens to be one of his dad’s journals, and upon opening it, a small sketch falls out with some writing that reads “Phoenix - Find with map.” Sam excitedly informs Dean that he thinks he has found what they have been searching for the entire time - the weapon to ‘destroy Chuck’. Dean, unsurprisingly, is skeptical.
As the brothers continue their journey, they embark on a hunt for the mythical phoenix mentioned in the journal. The creature is believed to be unkillable, and its ashes are reputed to have incredible healing abilities. After searching far and wide, they finally track the phoenix down and confront it.
As they wrangle with the phoenix, the brothers are reminded of their pivotal role as heroes - they have always been destined to protect the world and the innocents in it. Their epic journey of saving the world from entities that were out to destroy it began when their mother was killed by Azazel, a powerful demon who was on a mission to free Lucifer from his cage in Hell.
The Winchester brothers have faced everything the supernatural world has thrown their way - witches, vampires, werewolves, wraiths, angels, demons, and even God himself. All of their efforts have been fueled by their determination to protect the people they love and care about. However, as they grapple with the phoenix, they begin to realize that they can no longer continue alone - they have a family - the people who have fought alongside them and those who they have saved - and they need their help to defeat Chuck.
The episode is full of tension and high-drama, punctuated with comical one-liners that have become the show’s trademark. It reiterates the premise of family and the bond between those who fight together for a common cause. Additionally, it signifies that the Winchester brothers are not alone in their mission, and they will have an army behind them as they face their biggest enemy yet.
Whether or not the phoenix is the elusive weapon that the brothers have been searching for, remains to be seen - the episode ends on a cliffhanger. But what’s certain is that the Winchester brothers, along with their family, are willing to embark on the final leg of their journey with renewed vigor and an understanding that their journey is not just about them, but the people that they have fought to protect.
Overall, this episode is a testament to the strength of the show, and the dedication of its fandom. The fact that the show has been running successfully for over a decade is a testament to its incredible storytelling, its unforgettable characters, and the unwavering love and dedication of its audience. Fans of this iconic show will be thrilled to see one of the show’s biggest themes come full circle - family, sacrifice, and heroism.
