As Supernanny begins its seventh season, the first family that Jo Frost works with is the Atkinson family. The Atkinsons are a family of five living in Georgia: parents David and Barbara, and their three children - Amber (9), Simeon (7), and Kayla (5). The couple's marriage is on the rocks, with frequent arguments and outbursts leaving everyone in the family feeling highly stressed and on edge.
Jo Frost arrives at the family's home to find a chaotic environment, with toys and clothes scattered everywhere, the children bickering and fighting constantly, and David and Barbara struggling to keep their tempers in check. Jo begins her observations in the family's living room, where she watches the parents interact with their children. She quickly notices that David and Barbara have drastically different parenting styles, which is leading to confusion and resentment among the kids.
David is a strict disciplinarian who uses a lot of yelling and intimidation to get his way, while Barbara tends to coddle the children and struggles to set boundaries. Jo observes that this dynamic has created a power struggle within the family, with the kids constantly playing their parents against each other in order to get what they want.
Jo's first priority is to establish a consistent discipline plan that both parents can agree on. She instructs David and Barbara to sit down and work together to come up with a list of rules and consequences that will be applied consistently across the board. The parents are initially resistant, but Jo pushes them until they come up with a reasonable plan that they can both agree on.
Next, Jo works with each of the children individually to help them understand the new rules and consequences. She spends time with Amber, Simeon, and Kayla, discussing their behavior and feelings, and helping them develop strategies for managing their emotions and staying on track with their new expectations. Jo also coaches the children's parents on ways to reinforce positive behavior and manage negative behavior without resorting to yelling or physical punishments.
Finally, Jo leads a family meeting where the new discipline plan is presented to the children. She uses role-playing and other interactive activities to help the kids understand the rules and consequences, and to get them thinking about how they can work together to create a more harmonious family dynamic.
Throughout her time with the Atkinson family, Jo emphasizes the importance of communication, consistency, and teamwork. She shows David and Barbara how to work together to create a positive parenting environment, and teaches the children how to cooperate and respect one another. By the end of the episode, the family has made significant progress, and Jo feels confident that they are on their way to a happier, healthier home life.
