Super Fun Night was a comedy series created by Rebel Wilson, who also starred in the show. The series premiered on ABC in the fall of 2013 and aired for one season before being cancelled in 2014. The series follows three best friends, Kimmie (Rebel Wilson), Marika (Lauren Ash), and Helen-Alice (Liza Lapira), who decide to have a "super fun" night every Friday to break free from their mundane lives.
Kimmie is a lawyer who's always been a bit of a wallflower. She's always been content with spending her weekends at home with her cat, but she decides to break out of her shell and embrace a more adventurous lifestyle. Marika is Kimmie's best friend and co-worker, who's sarcastic and cynical but has a hidden soft side. She's a paralegal at the same law firm as Kimmie, and she's also openly gay. Helen-Alice is Kimmie's other best friend, who's compulsive and anxious. She's a dental hygienist who's overly emotional and tries to be the peacemaker between Kimmie and Marika.
Every Friday, the three friends come together to do something fun and exciting. However, their attempts at having a good time often go awry, and they find themselves in some hilarious and embarrassing situations. Some of their adventures include going to a karaoke bar, attending a murder mystery dinner party, and crashing a hoity-toity nightclub.
The show also explores the romantic lives of the three women. Kimmie has a crush on Richard (Kevin Bishop), a British attorney who works at her law firm. However, Richard is dating Kendall (Kate Jenkinson), a competitive lawyer who's always trying to one-up Kimmie. Marika is dating an older woman named Robin (Kate Jenkinson), who's trying to win her over with extravagant gifts. Helen-Alice's boyfriend is a dentist named Vince (Nate Torrence), who's overly protective of her.
Super Fun Night was praised for its diverse representation of women, particularly with its portrayal of a plus-size woman as the lead character. The show also tackled important issues such as body image, self-confidence, and acceptance. However, the show faced criticism for its lack of diversity in terms of race and sexuality, with only one main character, Marika, being openly gay.
Despite its positive aspects, Super Fun Night was ultimately cancelled due to low ratings. The show received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising Rebel Wilson's performance and comedic timing, while others found the show to be formulaic and predictable.
Overall, Super Fun Night was a quirky and lighthearted comedy series that aimed to provide audiences with a fun and relatable portrayal of friendship and self-discovery. While it may not have been a huge success, it remains a cult favorite among fans who appreciate its humor and heart.
