In "Back on the Map," the third episode of the sixth season of Suits, Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) and Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman) try to repair the damage caused by their fight over Harvey's promotion to managing partner. The two lawyers end up accidentally insulting a potential client, Robert Zane (Wendell Pierce), who happens to be a lawyer at a rival firm and the father of Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle), a paralegal at their own firm. This results in a difficult negotiation for a merger between their firms. Meanwhile, Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) tries to find his place at the firm now that he is no longer a fraud--but still doesn't have a law degree.
The episode opens with Harvey and Louis in an awkward elevator ride with Robert Zane, where they each try to apologize for the mishap. Robert accepts their apologies but makes it clear that this kind of mistake is unacceptable in his line of work. Later, the two lawyers present their proposal for a merger to Robert's firm, but their rival lawyers drive a hard bargain. However, it is clear that Robert, who has a good relationship with his daughter Rachel, is impressed with the two lawyers.
In the meantime, Mike is struggling to find his footing at the firm without his secret hanging over his head. He is being given insignificant tasks, and he is getting restless. Rachel suggests that he work a case with her to prove his worth, but when they both have different opinions on how to proceed, it becomes clear that Mike still has a lot to learn. He ultimately decides to turn to Harvey for guidance, but Harvey is preoccupied with the merger negotiations.
As the merger negotiations drag on, Harvey and Louis both make mistakes that almost ruin their chances of finalizing the deal. Harvey tries to cut a deal behind Louis's back, which infuriates Louis, while Louis nearly sabotages the whole thing because of his pride. In the end, though, they manage to pull it off, thanks in part to Mike's contribution of a clear head and solid legal research.
Throughout the episode, characters reflect on what it means to make a mistake and how to recover from it. Robert Zane, whose daughter has had her own share of setbacks, advises Harvey and Louis that it's not about the mistake itself, but how they deal with it. Mike also learns this lesson when he knocks over a tray of drinks and acts defensively before taking responsibility and apologizing.
"Back on the Map" is a strong episode of Suits that showcases the various relationships and dynamics within the show. Harvey and Louis's power struggle is still at the forefront, but it is clear that they have a respect for each other's skills as lawyers. Mike's struggles to find his place, as well as his determination to make things right, continue to be a compelling arc. The arrival of Robert Zane as an antagonist is also interesting, as it gives Rachel's character even more depth and backstory. The episode also tackles themes of pride, humility, and redemption in a thoughtful way that still fits within the show's stylish and fast-paced world.
