In Street Legal season 1 episode 2 "Moving Day," we follow the life of Olivia Novak, a newcomer to legal firm, Falconer and Co. As she settles into her new job, she finds it difficult to adjust to the new work environment with her colleagues skeptical of her personal background.
Meanwhile, Olivia's father, Charlie Novak, who has been in jail for the past ten years, reaches out to her. He needs her help to find a new home after his previous landlord is threatening to sell the apartment. Olivia resents the interruption but later agrees to help after being convinced by her elder sister, Marty.
Olivia leaves work early to meet with her father, who had turned down the offer of a state-funded lawyer, and they meet with the landlord who gives them an ultimatum to vacate in less than two weeks. Olivia is initially taken aback by her father's lack of concern and protests his relaxed attitude until he reveals that he has a health condition that he intends to keep from her and others.
As the pressure mounts to find a new home, Olivia turns to her colleagues for help, but her boss, Leon, is hesitant to get involved in Olivia's personal affairs. Determined to find a solution, Olivia begins calling all the lawyers she knows, and finally, a property lawyer secures a new home for Charlie.
At work, Olivia has a case that she is struggling to win for her client, Joseph, whose mother had passed away after an accident. The defendant in the case is insurance firm, Harris and Burnett, which denies responsibility for the accident. Olivia takes a different approach to the case, and instead of relying on eyewitness accounts, she interviews Joseph's neighbours and documents the level of danger that the defendant's actions posed to the public.
In court, Olivia succeeds in getting Joseph's case heard before the jury, but despite her best efforts, the jury finds in favour of the defendant. Olivia is left feeling dejected by this loss after having been passionate about her fight.
Back at home, Olivia's father breaks the news that he's considering using funds intended for her sister's education to pay for his legal fees. Olivia is furious at the idea, and the two argue until her father collapses due to his health condition. After visiting him at the hospital, Olivia finally makes peace with her father and is grateful for the time they spent together.
In the end, Olivia realises that their win was not in the court of law but rather in finding a new home for Charlie. Olivia uses her professional skills to give her father a new home, and in doing so, she gets a sense of satisfaction that she'd been deprived of in her professional life. She learns that sometimes, winning in life means fighting a different battle.
