Stone House Revival is a show that follows expert renovator Jeff Devlin as he takes on the challenge of restoring classic, historical homes to their former glory. In season 4, episode 3 titled Historic Mystery, Devlin takes on one of his most challenging projects yet- a 1700s-era stone home that has been gutted and abandoned for several decades.
The episode begins with Devlin surveying the property and assessing the damage. The old stone home has fallen into severe disrepair due to years of neglect and will require extensive renovations. Devlin notes that the property has a lot of potential and is excited about the opportunity to restore such a historical gem.
The homeowner has expressed a desire for the home's original features to be preserved as much as possible, and Devlin takes this into account as he begins to formulate his renovation plan. He first tackles the exterior, repairing the stone walls and chimney and replacing the dilapidated roof. He also adds new windows and a front door to improve the home's curb appeal.
Inside, Devlin must work with a blank slate. There are no original features remaining, so he must use his knowledge of historical architecture to create a space that is both functional and true to the home's heritage. He decides to create an open floor plan on the main level, with a large kitchen and dining area, as well as a living room with a fireplace. He also plans to add a bathroom and laundry room to this floor.
The second level will house the bedrooms, and Devlin decides to create a master suite with a walk-in closet and en-suite bathroom. He also plans to add two additional bedrooms and a shared bathroom. To give the rooms some character, he incorporates reclaimed wood and antique fixtures into the design.
Throughout the renovation process, Devlin encounters several surprises that create some unexpected challenges. For example, as he removes the old plaster from the walls, he discovers that the home's original framing has been compromised by insect damage. He must work quickly to replace the damaged wood and reinforce the structure.
Another challenge arises when Devlin attempts to create a vaulted ceiling in the living room. He discovers that the home's old timber beams cannot support the weight of the new ceiling, so he must come up with a creative alternative that will still give the room the desired effect.
Despite these setbacks, Devlin remains optimistic and determined to create a beautiful, functional home that will honor its historical roots. Throughout the renovation, he maintains a respectful and collaborative relationship with the homeowner, taking their input into account and working with them to create a space that meets their needs and exceeds their expectations.
As the episode concludes, the home is almost complete, and the final touches are being added to the interior. Devlin reflects on the challenges and rewards of restoring such a historically significant property and is excited about the opportunity to share the finished product with the world.
