Steven Universe Future season 1 episode 15, titled "Mr. Universe," follows the titular character as he reconnects with his estranged father, Greg. The episode begins with Steven accompanying Greg on a road trip to a concert as part of his dad's newfound foray back into music. Along the way, the two bond over various memories, including Steven's birth and the circumstances surrounding his mother, Pink Diamond.
As they travel, Steven begins to realize that his relationship with his dad isn't as solid as he thought. Despite his happy-go-lucky exterior, Greg is harboring anxious thoughts about parenthood and the future. Steven tries to reassure him but finds himself struggling with his own concerns about growing up. The two continue to bond over their shared uncertainty, but it becomes increasingly apparent that the concert might not be the pivotal, life-changing experience that Greg had hoped for.
Meanwhile, the other Crystal Gems are left to deal with various issues back home. Amethyst is battling with her self-esteem and fears that her shapeshifting powers may never be enough to help others. Garnet is struggling to connect with Steven in the same way that she used to before his newfound independence, and Pearl is grappling with her feelings about being replaced as Steven's sole parental figure. Throughout the episode, these struggles play out in subtle, emotional ways as the Gems come to realize that Steven is growing up whether they like it or not.
As the episode draws to a close, Steven and Greg find themselves in a verdant forest, unsure of how to proceed. Greg admits that he doesn't have all the answers and apologizes for the pressure he's put on Steven to figure everything out. The two come to a mutual understanding that growing up is a scary, imperfect process and that it's okay to be uncertain. In a touching moment, Steven serenades Greg with a ukelele song he wrote, expressing his appreciation for his dad's support and love throughout his life.
In typical Steven Universe fashion, "Mr. Universe" is simultaneously heartwarming and introspective, tackling themes of family, growing up, and uncertainty with a deft hand. As Steven continues on his journey of self-discovery, it's clear that his relationships with those around him will continue to be a major source of both joy and heartache.
