Steven Universe Future is an American animated television series that premiered on Cartoon Network on December 7th, 2019. It is the sequel to the original series, Steven Universe, which aired from 2013 to 2019.
The first episode of Steven Universe Future's first season is called "Little Homeschool." The episode starts with Steven Universe returning to Beach City after saving the universe from the Diamonds. Following the events of the original series, this new show sees Steven's character development following the climactic ending of the original series.
In "Little Homeschool," Steven decides to create a school for the Gems who want to learn more about themselves and the world around them. Gems are an alien species that were introduced in the original series. They are humanoid in appearance, but have the ability to shapeshift, possess magical powers and abilities, and have a unique gemstone that is their core identity.
At the school, Gems can learn Earth traditions and integrate themselves into human society. The school is designed to teach them how to live in harmony with humans, learn about their culture and how to better understand others around them. Steven encourages the Gems to be creative and explore their unique abilities, while learning the practical skills they'll need to exist and thrive in the wider world.
We are introduced to Gems like Lapis, Peridot, Bismuth, and many others. The character of Lapis, for example, was once trapped for thousands of years and has only recently been freed. She is still unsure about her place in the world, and this new school gives her the tools to explore her identity and place on Earth.
As the episode progresses, we see that not all Gems are interested in attending the school. Some Gems, like Jasper, are still struggling to rebuild after the events caused by the Diamond's reign. Similarly, some Gems simply don't want to learn about Earth. We also see a new Gem, uncontrollable and unable to speak, who is still learning about her abilities.
Despite these challenges, the school shows noticeable progress as Gems learn new skills and learn to work, learn, and live alongside humans. We see one Gem develop an interest in architecture, while another discovers a talent for painting. Steven and the other Gems working alongside him celebrate this freedom of expression and creativity.
Throughout the episode, we see glimpses of Steven's own struggles. He is having trouble readjusting to his former life on Earth. He is confused by his own purpose and how everyone seems different after he has saved the universe. Steven is also trying to be the same person as before, constantly checking in with everyone.
At the end of the episode, Steven is walking alone along the beach. He's approached by a mysterious figure who tells him that he shouldn't be sad, but that he should be celebrating. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, reminding viewers that just like Steven, everyone and everything else is also in transition.
"Little Homeschool" is a meaningful first episode that sets up the new chapter in the Steven Universe story perfectly. It explores themes of identity, self-discovery, and growth that weaves the original series' tales of community, love, and understanding. The episode showcases the camaraderie that formed throughout the initial story. It is a reminder that the Gems are not these other-worldly creatures but individuals with unique characteristics.
In sum, "Little Homeschool" is a must-watch of anyone invested in the gritty, intricately crafted world of Steven Universe. It showcases the start of something new, carries out an appreciation of the previous characters' journeys, while striking an emotional chord with its newer viewers.
