In the Step by Step season 4 episode 10, titled "Letting Go," the Foster-Lambert clan faces various challenges as they learn to let go of their fears, obsessions, and even one another.
Firstly, Frank (played by Patrick Duffy), the patriarch of the family, is concerned about JT's (played by Brandon Call) future. JT has become obsessed with becoming a filmmaker and Frank worries that his son will fail to excel in his chosen career path. Despite his father's concerns, JT continues to work on his film and seeks mentorship from his uncle Cody (played by Sasha Mitchell), who was once a successful filmmaker himself.
Meanwhile, Karen (played by Angela Watson), the eldest daughter of the Foster-Lambert family, is struggling to come to terms with her newfound independence. After moving out of the family home, Karen begins to realize that creating a life for herself is harder than she anticipated. She struggles to maintain a job and pay her bills, but also finds herself torn between a budding relationship with her boss and her loyalty to her longtime boyfriend Michael.
Dana (played by Staci Keanan), the second eldest daughter, also faces challenges relating to love and friendship. She develops a budding romance with a fellow student and learns to let go of her perfectionism, even if it means disappointing her family. But when her best friend Rich confesses his feelings for her, Dana finds herself torn between the two men and struggles to make a decision.
Finally, Carol (played by Suzanne Somers), the matriarch of the family, learns to let go of control and allows her husband Frank to take the reins in planning their upcoming vacation. It's a small step, but it marks an important evolution in Carol's character as she learns to trust those around her and relinquish some of her control.
Throughout the episode, the family grapples with the idea of letting go in various forms – of expectations, of control, of relationships – and ultimately learns that growth and change can be both challenging and rewarding. The episode also showcases the tight-knit bond of the Foster-Lambert family as they navigate their individual struggles and support each other through each obstacle.
