Frank and Carol are excited to take a much-needed weekend getaway for their anniversary, but are hesitant to leave their brood of children behind. They eventually agree to let them fend for themselves and trust that they will behave responsibly.
Meanwhile, Karen and Dana have plans of their own. Karen has a new boyfriend, Jason, and has allowed him to come over and spend time with her while her parents are away. Dana, on the other hand, is feeling left out and desperately seeks the attention of a boy of her own.
When Karen's plans with Jason fall through, she and her friends decide to crash a party in a nearby town. Dana sneaks out to the same party, hoping to catch the eye of her crush.
As the night goes on, Karen and her friends begin to drink and get into trouble. Jason, who is trying to keep them out of trouble, calls Carol in a panic and explains the situation. Carol races to the party to bring Karen and her friends back home safely.
Meanwhile, Dana's crush reveals himself to be a chauvinistic jerk and she is left feeling disappointed and hurt. But when she sees Karen getting into trouble at the party, she puts her own feelings aside and helps Carol in bringing everyone home safely.
In the end, Frank and Carol are proud of their children for handling themselves responsibly and working together in a time of crisis. Karen learns the importance of responsible decision making and Dana learns the value of empathy and putting others first.
