It's a Dog's Life is the fifth episode of the second season of the popular family sitcom Step by Step. The episode focuses on the members of the Foster-Lambert family as they come across a stray dog and decide to take him in.
The episode begins with the family returning home from a day out when they spot a stray dog wandering around their neighborhood. The dog seems lost and hungry, and the Foster-Lambert family, being animal lovers, immediately decide to take him in. They take the dog to their home, where they give him food and water and try to make him comfortable. The kids, especially Brendan and J.T., are excited to have a dog in the house, but Carol, their stepmother, is a little hesitant.
Carol is concerned about the dog's well-being and is worried that he might have an owner who is missing him. She calls the local animal shelter to report the lost dog and enquire about his owner. However, the shelter informs her that they are unable to take in any more animals due to limited space and resources. Carol is left with no choice but to keep the dog until his owner is found.
The family begins to grow attached to the dog, whom they name Lucky. They take him for walks, play with him, and make him a part of their daily routine. However, Lucky's presence in the house starts to cause some problems. He chews on furniture, makes a mess, and barks loudly at night, disrupting everyone's sleep. Carol begins to feel overwhelmed and stressed out, but she doesn't want to give up on Lucky.
Meanwhile, Frank, the father of the family, is dealing with his own issues. He's been feeling overworked and under-appreciated at his job as a construction worker. His boss has been giving him a hard time, and his co-workers aren't making things any easier. Frank is stressed out and exhausted, and he doesn't know how to cope with it.
One day, Frank takes Lucky for a walk and realizes that the dog is a great listener. He talks to Lucky about his problems, and Lucky seems to understand him. Frank starts to feel better and decides to take some time off work to relax and recharge. He spends more time with the family and Lucky, and they all have a great time.
However, their happiness is short-lived when Lucky's original owner comes forward to claim him. The family is sad to say goodbye to Lucky, but they know that he belongs with his rightful owner. They let Lucky go with a heavy heart, but they are happy to have made a difference in his life.
The episode concludes with Frank returning to work with a refreshed perspective, and the family bonding over their experience with Lucky. They realize that no matter how short the time, making a difference in someone's life, even a dog's, can be incredibly rewarding.
