Frank Lambert, a widowed contractor, decides to pay his girlfriend Carol Foster, a recently divorced hairdresser, a surprise visit in her home in Port Washington, Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Carol is trying her best to organize her house, but her three kids, Dana, Karen, and Mark, are making it almost impossible for things to stay neat and tidy. Frank, who also has three kids, J.T., Al, and Brendan, is taken aback by the chaotic mess and tries to help Carol with her organization problems.
In episode 13 of Step by Step, entitled "Getting Organized," the blended family decides to have a garage sale to get rid of all the unnecessary clutter in their house and make some extra cash. While everyone is enthusiastic about the idea, they quickly realize that they have a lot of work ahead of them.
Karen, who is supposed to price everything, is too busy with her boyfriend to bother, while J.T. is preoccupied with his new girlfriend. Dana, on the other hand, wants to make sure everything is priced fairly, and Al wants to sell everything for as much money as possible. This difference in opinion causes tension in the family, as they struggle to come up with a plan that works for everyone.
Meanwhile, Frank takes it upon himself to organize Carol's beauty salon, which is also in desperate need of some cleaning and tidying up. Frank is so serious about the task that he even brings in his contractor crew to help.
As the day of the garage sale approaches, tensions continue to rise within the family, until they finally come up with a simple solution that works for everyone. They all agree to sell everything for the same price, no matter what it is. This plan not only eliminates the need for pricing everything, but it also prevents any further disagreements.
The day of the garage sale finally arrives, and the family is thrilled to see a huge turnout. Although the day starts out a bit chaotic, things quickly smooth out, and everyone has a great time. The family is able to get rid of a lot of unnecessary clutter, and they end up making more money than they had anticipated.
In the end, the family is happy and relieved to have been able to sell so much, and they all come away with a newfound appreciation for organization. They realize that it's not only about keeping things neat and tidy but also about working together and compromising as a family.
