As much as Season 3 of StartUp has been about advancing new technology, there's always been a sense that it was really a show about Miami. And in its final episode, "Trading Up," that becomes more true than ever.
With Natalia's (Mira Sorvino) latest move, the gang has a chance to sell GenCoin and become true players in the Miami business community. But as is always the case with StartUp, nothing is ever clean or easy.
As Alex (Otmara Marrero) struggles to regain her place in the group after betraying them in the early episodes, her father (Paul Calderon) returns to the picture, throwing the budding businesswoman's world into chaos once more.
Meanwhile, Izzy (Maimi Beaumont) is forced to reckon with the fact that the technology that she's worked so hard for and believed in is also what's brought so much pain and suffering into the world.
As the various plot threads come together in "Trading Up," it becomes clear that this season of StartUp has been both the most personal and the most engaged with the world around it. There are no easy answers here, and no one is entirely in the right.
If there's a message to be gleaned from StartUp's final season, it's that the world is complicated and difficult, but that doesn't mean we should give up on trying to improve it. In fact, it's only through pushing forward and making hard decisions that we can hope to achieve something better.
