Ep 7. Affinity

In season 8, episode 7 of Stargate SG1 titled Affinity, the members of SG1 return to Earth. After so many years of traveling to other planets and interacting with other inhabitants of the galaxy, they struggle to readjust to the ways of their own planet. O'Neill is immediately sent on a mission to Washington, D.C. to brief the President about their recent happenings and to answer any questions that are necessary. This leaves the rest of the members of SG1 to go their separate ways. Daniel Jackson chooses to return to his old teaching job at a local university, Carter returns to her duties at the SGC, and Teal'c returns to the Jaffa Nation to reconnect with his people.

As SG1 begins to focus on their individual goals, they struggle to separate their new lives on Earth from the lives they once knew. Daniel Jackson finds himself at odds with other faculty members at his university, who wish to tow the line of traditional academia despite the fact that the teachers are all former military personnel. He befriends the young neighbor, Krista, next door, who is facing her own struggle of being a black sheep in a family of highly-skilled athletes. Meanwhile, Carter is busy managing her duties at the SGC while also attempting to maintain a covert relationship with her new boyfriend, Police Detective Pete Shanahan, both of whom are having trouble balancing work life with their personal one.

However, things take a turn for the worst when Pete's jealousy over Carter's friendship with Colonel O'Neill leads to an outburst, calling Carter's loyalty to SG1 into question. Things only escalate when a group of unknown assailants, who seem to be targeting Pete specifically, attack him in his own home. Fearing for his safety, Brandon leaves Carter and moves in with Krista.

SG1 attempts to assist in the investigation into the attack and find the culprits responsible. However, when it is revealed that Pete is being followed by the same agents who previously tracked SG1 while they were off-world, it becomes clear that the attack was more than a simple mugging. SG1 rushes to piece together the agents' plans and goals, all while trying to keep Pete and Krista safe.

The episode's title, "Affinity," speaks to the idea of belonging and fitting in. Each member of SG1 has their own struggle with maintaining their old life and finding a sense of home on Earth, but the episode takes the theme even further, exploring the idea of fitting into a society that is home to many people but may not necessarily understand them and their experiences.
