SG1 embark on a routine mission to explore a planet when they are ambushed by an unknown enemy force. The team become separated in the chaos and are forced to fend for themselves while trying to reunite. As they struggle to evade their pursuers, they come across an unexpected ally, a mysterious man. With his unexpected help, the team is able to regroup and fight back against their attackers. However, when they return home, they discover that the man who helped them is not who he seems. SG1 must then unravel the mystery of the fifth man in order to determine whether he is friend or foe, and what his true motives are.

The episode begins with SG1 preparing to embark on a mission to a remote planet. As they arrive, they begin to explore the surrounding area. However, it isn't long before they realize that they are not alone. They are ambushed by an unknown enemy force and split into groups as they attempt to evade their attackers. One group, consisting of Colonel O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson), Carter (Amanda Tapping), and Dr. Jackson (Michael Shanks), find themselves in a cave, where they discover an unexpected ally.

The man, who goes by the name of Fifth (Jarvis George), claims to be a survivor of a similar attack and offers to help them find their missing teammates. Despite initial reservations from the team, they agree to work with Fifth, and together they are able to reunite with Teal'c (Christopher Judge).

As they progress through the planet, they find themselves facing numerous obstacles to their escape. However, with the help of Fifth, they are able to overcome each one. As they fight back against the enemy forces, they realize that they are up against a highly advanced enemy technology that is unlike anything they have seen before.

After their escape, SG1 returns home, but they soon discover that they may not have been entirely alone on the planet. They find evidence that there may have been a fifth member of their team. This discovery raises suspicions among the team, who start to question whether or not Fifth was actually there to help them or whether he played a role in their separation.

As SG1 begin to investigate, they come across a number of inconsistencies in Fifth's story. They begin to suspect that he may have ulterior motives. In light of this, they decide to run a series of tests on him, which prove to be inconclusive.

The plot thickens when Fifth reveals that he has been genetically altered by an advanced alien race. He claims that he was modified to help SG1 escape from the enemy forces and return home. However, when SG1 seek further clarification, his story begins to unravel.

As they attempt to unravel the mystery of Fifth, SG1 must also contend with the continuing threat posed by the enemy technology that they encountered on the planet. They realize that if they cannot find a way to counteract it, the planet and its inhabitants will be lost forever.

In the end, SG1 must work together to uncover the truth behind Fifth's motives and determine whether or not he is truly their ally. As they race against time to neutralize the enemy threat and save the planet, they become embroiled in a dangerous game of cat and mouse that will test their strength, courage, and loyalty to the limit.

Overall, "The Fifth Man" is a tense, action-packed episode that explores themes of betrayal and the consequences of trust. With its tightly woven plot, strong character development, and engaging performances, it is a standout installment in the Stargate SG1 series.
