SG1 embarks on yet another mission through the Stargate to the planet Kheb where they are in search of a Harsesis child, a child born to two Goa'uld hosts, with the hopes of finding a way to defeat or better understand the Goa'uld race. However, upon arrival they find the planet and its inhabitants under attack by a Goa'uld named Heru'ur.
After joining forces with the remaining Kheb inhabitants, SG1 discovers that the Harsesis child they seek may be in the hands of Sha're - the wife of team member Daniel Jackson - who was previously taken as a host by the Goa'uld Apophis. The team decides to attempt to rescue both the child and Sha're from Heru'ur's stronghold on the planet.
Along the way, team member Samantha Carter experiences a vision of her long-deceased father who tells her to protect the child at all costs, giving credence to the child's potential importance in their fight against the Goa'uld. As they battle their way through Heru'ur's forces, the team is able to rescue Sha're and retrieve the Harsesis child.
However, the mission takes a tragic turn when Sha're is killed in the chaos of the escape attempt. The team mourns the loss of their friend and teammate and is left questioning the cost of their mission.
The episode explores themes of sacrifice, loss, and the lengths to which individuals will go to fight for what they believe in. It also delves deeper into the personal lives and emotions of the SG1 team, particularly in regard to Daniel's love for his wife and Carter's relationship with her own deceased father. The high-stakes action and emotional intensity of “Maternal Instinct” makes it a standout episode in the third season of Stargate SG1.
