SG-1 returns to Earth, where they find General Hammond replaced by a civilian bureaucrat, Richard Woolsey, who dismantles the Stargate Program. SG-1 is later invited to participate in a training mission for a new Stargate team, designated SG-2, under the leadership of Colonel Makepeace. SG-1 soon discover a strange device on another planet called a V.A.R.: a virtual reality chair that can implant real memories and emotions into the user's mind. Jack O'Neill, seeking respite from his painful memories, volunteers to test the device. However, the machine malfunctions, trapping Jack in his happiest moments for hours. As SG-1 tries to free him, they discover that the V.A.R. has given Jack permanent brain damage instead. With the help of Daniel's linguistics skills, the team discovers that the V.A.R. originated from the planet Jack was stranded on when the Hatak attacked him. SG-1 returns to Jack's planet and finds an alien called Harlan, who reveals that he built the V.A.R. with help from an unknown alien race in exchange for preserving their civilization in the virtual world. The team must race against time to find the real Jack and retrieve his consciousness before the Hatak can kill them all. The episode is tense and heart-wrenching, providing a rare glimpse into the consequences of unchecked technology.
