SG-1’s season two episode “Spirits” brings viewers to the planet of Kelowna, where the local indigenous people are plagued by a series of mysterious deaths. SG-1 is sent through the Stargate to investigate the situation and offer any assistance they can.
Upon arrival, SG-1 meets with the governor and learns that the Kelownans have been trying to harness the power of their planet’s vorlix mineral, which they believe can be used as a limitless source of energy. Despite the warnings of the local indigenous people, the Kelownans have been mining the mineral at an alarming rate, leading to a number of environmental and health problems.
SG-1 meets with the indigenous people and learns that they believe the vorlix mineral is home to powerful spirits who must be respected and placated in order to avoid disaster. The spirits are angry with the Kelownans for their reckless mining and have been punishing them with storms and other disasters.
As SG-1 investigates further, they discover that the vorlix mineral is in fact alive and sentient, and that the spirits of the indigenous people are very real and very powerful. In an attempt to stop the Kelownans’ destructive mining practices, SG-1 hatches a plan to communicate with the spirits and convince them to spare the Kelownans while also putting an end to their mining activities.
The plan is risky, but it is the only way to prevent further damage to the planet and its inhabitants. SG-1 risks everything to communicate with the spirits of the vorlix mineral, and the fate of the Kelownans and the planet itself rests in their hands.
