The episode opens with SG1 returning from a mission on a planet where they found a sample of a mysterious substance that could be used as a new energy source. Upon their return to Earth, the team members are put through a routine medical examination, during which it is discovered that one of them has been implanted with a Goa'uld larvae.
The Goa'uld, a parasitic creature that takes control of its host's body and mind, is a known enemy of the Stargate program. SG1 immediately begins an investigation to determine which team member has been infected and how they came into contact with the creature.
