After a year of struggles and triumphs, the team members of Stargate Atlantis are given a rare day off to relax and unwind. However, when the city is hit by a devastating tragedy, they are forced to come together and support one another through their darkest hour.
The episode titled "Sunday" starts off with a montage of the team members going about their day, enjoying the rare freedom from their duties. John Sheppard (portrayed by Joe Flanigan) is seen fishing by the pier, Teyla Emmagan (Rachel Luttrell) is practicing her stick fighting, and Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) is seen trying to enjoy a movie, but he's constantly interrupted by various members of the team.
Meanwhile, Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion) is seen preparing to attend his sister's Highland Games, which he attends every year. However, when he receives an urgent message from the infirmary, he's forced to cut his trip short and return to Atlantis, where he learns of a horrific event that has occurred.
The team is gathered in the conference room, where they learn that one of their fellow crew members, Dr. Kavanagh (Ben Cotton), was working on a project that went horribly wrong. The explosion he caused has killed 16 members of the Atlantis community, including a close friend of the team, Dr. Lindsey Novak (Megan Leitch).
The bombing has not only left the team in shock, but it's also created an emotional ripple effect throughout the community. The team members are seen trying to grapple with their grief and anger, while also attempting to support one another through it all.
Throughout the episode, the team is shown coming together to mourn their lost friends and colleagues. They hold a memorial service for the fallen members of their community, where Carson Beckett pays tribute to his sister, who had died many years ago. He talks about how important it is to cherish the moments we have with our loved ones, as they can be taken away from us at any moment.
As the day wears on, the team members are shown dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy in different ways. Some, like Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa), channel their anger into physical activity, while others, like Rodney McKay, try to distract themselves with their work.
As the episode comes to a close, the team members gather once again, this time at the pier, where John Sheppard explains that he has decided to stay on Atlantis for another year. He talks about how much the team has come to mean to him and how important it is to surround ourselves with those we love during times of crisis.
Overall, "Sunday" is a powerful episode that highlights the importance of coming together in the face of tragedy. It showcases the strength of the Atlantis community and how they are able to support one another, even in their darkest hour. Through its poignant storytelling and impressive performances, this episode leaves a lasting impact on viewers.
