The Lost Boys is the tenth episode of the second season of the science fiction television series Stargate Atlantis. The episode was directed by Martin Wood and written by Martin Gero.
In this episode, a group of orphaned children, who have been living on their own for years on an isolated planet, are discovered by the team. However, when the children are brought back to Atlantis, they are unable to adjust to their new surroundings and resist the team's efforts to help them.
The episode begins with the team, consisting of Colonel John Sheppard, Major Samantha Carter, Dr. Rodney McKay, and Teyla Emmagan, investigating a planet that is believed to be uninhabitable. However, they unexpectedly find a group of young boys who have been living on the planet for years on their own. The boys, who are between the ages of six and eleven, have been surviving by themselves and have developed their own way of life.
The team is able to communicate with the boys, who explain that they were part of a group of settlers who crash-landed on the planet many years ago. The adults died in the crash, and the boys were left to fend for themselves. They have developed their own language, which is a mix of English and the language of the planet's original inhabitants.
The team decides to bring the boys back to Atlantis, where they will be given medical attention and a safe place to live. However, the boys quickly become agitated and show signs of extreme anxiety. They are unable to adjust to the new environment, and they display aggressive behavior towards the team members.
Dr. Carson Beckett, the chief medical officer on Atlantis, examines the boys and discovers that they have been exposed to a high level of radiation, which has affected their brain development. He also discovers that the boys have been eating a toxic plant, which has further affected their behavior and mental health.
The team soon realizes that they need to find a way to help the boys adjust to their new surroundings. Teyla, who is from a culture that values community and family, is able to connect with the boys and earn their trust. She helps them learn basic social skills and teaches them how to communicate with others.
As the boys begin to improve, the team discovers that there is a group of Wraith on the planet who have been using the boys as bait to lure other humans to their planet. The team must battle the Wraith and save the boys, who have become like family to them.
The Lost Boys is a poignant episode that explores themes of identity, belonging, and the human capacity for resilience. It features strong performances from the entire cast and showcases the show's commitment to telling stories that are both entertaining and thought-provoking.
