Ahsoka Tano and Lux Bonteri are sent on a mission to Onderon to train a group of rebels fighting against the Separatist droid army. The rebels, led by Lux's friend Saw Gerrera, are determined to reclaim their homeworld and resist the occupying forces. Ahsoka and Lux are tasked with teaching the rebels guerrilla tactics and how to operate effectively as a unit.
As they work with the rebels, Ahsoka and Lux also become embroiled in the politics of Onderon. The planet's queen, a puppet ruler installed by the Separatists, is forced to fake support for the rebels in order to maintain her position. Meanwhile, the former king of Onderon has joined forces with the Separatists and is overseeing the occupation of the planet.
As the rebels launch their first attack against a Separatist supply ship, Ahsoka and Lux begin to doubt their ability to successfully train them. Saw Gerrera is eager to fight and liberate his people, but his lack of patience and disregard for civilian casualties puts the rebellion at risk. Ahsoka must find a way to guide Saw without alienating him or undermining his leadership.
The Separatists respond to the rebels' attack with increased force, including an attack on a civilian market. Ahsoka, Lux, and Saw must balance their desire for revenge with the need to protect innocent lives. The rebels realize that they need to gain the support of the people of Onderon if they are going to succeed in their fight. With Ahsoka's guidance, they begin to engage in acts of resistance that directly impact the lives of civilians on Onderon.
As the conflict escalates, Ahsoka and Lux are faced with difficult choices about their allegiances and the greater good. The war has truly become personal for them, as they begin to develop relationships with the rebels they are training. The line between friend and foe is increasingly blurred as they struggle to navigate the complex politics of Onderon.
Meanwhile, the Separatists are determined to crush the rebellion and maintain their hold on the planet. They begin to deploy new weapons and strategies that test the rebels' resolve. The Soft War explores the tension between the desire for personal freedom and the need for collective action. It is a powerful and emotional episode that raises questions about leadership, sacrifice, and the nature of war.
