After Star's home was turned upside down following a slew of magical attacks, she and her friend Marco find themselves in another adventure. In the second episode of Season 2 of "Star vs. the Forces of Evil" titled "Mr. Candle Cares / Red Belt", Star and her mother Queen Moon attend a school orientation where they meet Mr. Candle, the guidance counselor. Mr. Candle offers Star some advice on how to handle her new life on Earth, but his care may not be genuine. Meanwhile, Marco takes up karate lessons and ends up wearing a red belt instead of the one he actually deserves.
In "Mr. Candle Cares", Star begins to feel homesick and misses her old life on Mewni. Mr. Candle approaches her and offers to help her feel more at home on Earth. This leads to Mr. Candle taking Star on a tour of the school and introducing her to a group of kids who have similar interests as her. Everything seems perfect, but there is something about Mr. Candle that gives off a creepy vibe.
Star's mother, Queen Moon, visits the school and quickly catches on to Mr. Candle's strange behavior. She warns Star to stay away from him but Star is reluctant to listen. Things take a turn for the worse when Mr. Candle offers to personally help Star with her studies and asks to see her wand. This sets off alarms for Queen Moon who realizes Mr. Candle's true intent.
In "Red Belt", Marco decides to take up karate when he realizes he needs to learn how to protect himself and Star in case of an attack. However, he quickly realizes that the lessons are more focused on self-discipline and being a good person than actual fighting techniques. Marco is disappointed when he doesn't get the belt he thinks he deserves and instead ends up with a red belt, which is the lowest rank.
Marco tries to cover up his red belt by wearing an oversized belt, but his instructor finds out and confronts him. After initially feeling defeated, Marco learns the true meaning behind the red belt and what it represents. He realizes that being a good person is more important than any belt rank and decides to wear his red belt with pride.
Overall, "Mr. Candle Cares / Red Belt" highlights the importance of listening to your instincts and valuing inner growth over external validation. Star learns to trust her mother's warnings and Marco learns to embrace his own personal growth rather than focusing on superficial achievements. The episode offers a great message for viewers of all ages while still providing a fun and entertaining storyline.
