Seven of Nine, the former Borg drone who has been struggling with her identity and place on the USS Voyager, discovers that her cortical node, a vital piece of technology that regulates her cybernetic implants, is failing. With her life in danger, the crew works together to find a replacement before it's too late.

Captain Janeway is determined to help Seven, despite her initial hesitations about the Borg and their advancements. She assigns B'Elanna Torres, the ship's chief engineer, to work on finding a solution for Seven's condition. However, Torres soon discovers that the only compatible replacement for Seven's cortical node is one of her own, and the risks involved in the procedure are significant.

As Seven's condition worsens, she struggles with fear and uncertainty about her own mortality.
