In Star Trek: Voyager Season 5 Episode 8 titled "Nothing Human," the focus is on the ship's doctor, the EMH (Emergency Medical Hologram) who is forced to work alongside a Cardassian doctor who is wanted for war crimes by the Federation. In order to save the life of a crew member, the EMH creates a holographic representation of the Cardassian doctor to assist with the procedure. However, tensions arise among the crew as they are reminded of the atrocities committed by the Cardassians during the war.
The episode opens with the EMH treating a crew member who has been infected with a deadly bio-mimetic organism. The EMH quickly realizes that he needs the assistance of a doctor who specializes in treating Cardassians if he wants to save the crew member's life. The only problem is that the only doctor who fits this description is Crell Moset, a Cardassian who was responsible for developing biological weapons during the war.
The EMH and Captain Janeway decide to use holographic technology to create a representation of Moset to assist with the procedure. However, the crew soon becomes divided over the decision to use a representation of Moset, who is wanted for war crimes by the Federation. Tensions rise as crew members are forced to confront the darker aspects of the war and their own prejudices.
The holographic Moset proves to be a highly efficient medical expert, impressing the EMH with his vast knowledge of Cardassian biology. As the procedure progresses, the EMH begins to question the ethics of working with a holographic representation of a war criminal. He confides in Kes, who encourages him to focus on the good that Moset's assistance can bring.
Meanwhile, tensions among the crew continue to rise as some of them refuse to work with a representation of Moset, while others believe that his expertise is indispensable. Torres, who lost her own father during the war, struggles with her own prejudice against the Cardassians. Her emotional turmoil reaches a climax when she confronts the holographic Moset, accusing him of being no different from the Cardassians who killed her father.
The episode reaches a dramatic conclusion as the crew successfully completes the procedure with the help of the holographic Moset. The crew is left to ponder the deeper implications of their actions, with some questioning the ethics of using a representation of a war criminal to save a life.
