As the crew works to find a way back to their own time, they face a number of challenges in the primitive world they now find themselves in. Capt. Janeway and Lt. Tuvok attempt to track down Starling and retrieve the stolen technology, while Tom Paris and Harry Kim struggle to blend in with the humans of the 20th century. The Doctor, who was downloaded into a mobile emitter and was left behind on Earth, finds himself becoming famous as a sought-after musician during a charity concert organized by Starling.
Meanwhile, the arrival of Voyager in the 20th century has drawn the attention of researchers monitoring possible extraterrestrial activity. The crew's presence in Los Angeles also leads to a confrontation with authorities and the discovery of a historical artifact which reveals information about the crew's future.
