"False Profits" is the fifth episode of season three of the science fiction TV series Star Trek: Voyager. In this episode, Captain Kathryn Janeway and her crew come across two Ferengi who have been lost in the Delta Quadrant for several years and have been posing as gods to a primitive civilization. The two Ferengi, Gosis and Talli, have been using their advanced technology to manipulate the people of the planet into worshiping them while they live a life of luxury.
When Voyager arrives, they discover that the primitive civilization has been sending ships filled with "offerings" to the heavens in hopes of pleasing their gods. Janeway discovers that the Ferengi have been intercepting these ships and taking all of the valuable goods for themselves. Upon further investigation, the crew of Voyager learns that the Ferengi have been using false prophets to maintain their control over the planet's inhabitants.
Janeway and her crew are eventually able to thwart the Ferengi's efforts and help the people of the planet begin to rebuild their society. The episode ends with the Ferengi returning to their ship and heading back out into space, no longer able to profit off of the people's beliefs.
Throughout the episode, there are also several subplots that take place. One involves the relationship between Neelix, the ship's morale officer, and Kes, a former member of the primitive civilization. Kes is struggling to adjust to life on Voyager, and Neelix is trying to help her feel more at home. Another subplot involves the Doctor, who is attempting to expand his programming to include music. The Doctor's efforts to be more creative are highlighted throughout the episode.
Overall, "False Profits" is a classic installment in the Star Trek franchise, exploring themes of religion and power in a unique and compelling way. It also features strong character development for many of the show's core cast members, making it an important episode in the series overall.
