The crew of the USS Voyager, a starship lost in the Delta Quadrant of the galaxy, finds a microscopic wormhole. They attempt to communicate with a Romulan ship on the other end, hoping to learn about their current location and perhaps find a way back to the Alpha Quadrant. The Romulan on the other end appears to be from their past, before they were stranded in the Delta Quadrant, and the two communicate about events that will happen in the future.
As the crew works to stabilize the wormhole and establish a clear communication link, they realize that the Romulan on the other end is actually from the past, specifically one year before Voyager was lost. The Romulan's ship is attempting to enter the wormhole from its own end, but it is too small for them to make it through.
As the crew attempts to send technology and information through the wormhole to the Romulan ship, they debate the morality of potentially changing the course of events in their own timeline. Should they try to prevent their own future hardships at the expense of altering the timeline? Or should they leave their future intact and continue their journey without interference?
Ultimately, the crew discovers that despite their best efforts, the Romulan ship is unable to pass through the tiny wormhole and they are forced to say goodbye to their past. However, they are left with a new perspective on the consequences of their actions and the importance of making responsible choices in the face of adversity.
