The episode begins with a captain's log that states that the Enterprise has received coordinates from a vessel that has been adrift for several weeks. Enterprise sets out to check the coordinates and soon comes across a Mazarite ship that is transporting a prisoner named Tarquin. When the crew of Enterprise asks about Tarquin, they are told that he is a dangerous criminal who has been sentenced to life in prison for his crimes.
Captain Archer decides to transport Tarquin aboard Enterprise to question him about his crimes. Upon meeting with Tarquin, Archer learns that he had been exiled to a remote planet by his own people, a race known as the Eska. Tarquin reveals that he has been working on a device that can make anything invisible, and he believes that this device is responsible for his exile. Archer is skeptical at first, but after Tarquin demonstrates the device, he begins to believe him.
Meanwhile, a team of Eska vessels arrives at Enterprise and demands that Tarquin be returned to them. The Eska explain that Tarquin's invisibility device is dangerous and could be used as a weapon. Archer refuses to hand over Tarquin, insisting that he has the right to question him about his device.
As the episode progresses, it becomes clear that Tarquin is not the villain he has been made out to be. He is a brilliant scientist who was exiled for his ideas. The Eska, fearing his knowledge, branded him a criminal and banished him to a planet where he could not share his discoveries with the rest of the universe.
Archer begins to sympathize with Tarquin and helps him to evade the Eska ships that are pursuing them. As they hide out on a nearby planet, Tarquin explains the true nature of his device. It cannot make anything invisible, but it can actually bend light around an object, making it appear invisible. Tarquin believes that his device could have many practical applications, including healthcare and transportation.
As the Eska ships close in, Archer and Tarquin make a daring escape aboard the Enterprise. In the end, Archer decides to help Tarquin seek out opportunities to use his device for the betterment of society. He promises to continue helping Tarquin, even though they are on the run from the Eska.
The episode ends with a captain's log that states that Enterprise is continuing its mission, despite the threat of the Eska. Tarquin remains aboard the ship, working on his invention and helping the crew to navigate the perils of deep space.
