Odo and Major Kira are performing routine maintenance on the station when they are abruptly transported to another location. They find themselves on a small alien vessel, where they encounter an alien entity that claims to be one of O'Brien's former crewmates from the USS Rutledge. The entity informs the two that it has been sent to Deep Space Nine to perform a dangerous mission, and requires their assistance to complete it.
Back on the station, Chief O'Brien and Dr. Bashir are puzzled by the sudden disappearance of Odo and Major Kira. Soon, they receive a distress signal from the alien vessel, and are shocked to hear that O'Brien's former crewmate is actually a malevolent entity that has taken control of Kira and Odo's bodies. The entity reveals that it has been sent to destroy the station's power generator, which would result in the destruction of the entire station.
As O'Brien and Bashir scramble to find a way to save the station, they are confronted by a series of challenges and obstacles.
